Julie Douglas comes to Class!

Dell’Arte’s Arts Engagement Director, Julie Douglas, taught a weekend workshop in Alexander Technique, opening up exploration of habitual response and somatic communication with our Participants at Pelican Bay in March 2024.

This kind of work is especially important in a carceral setting because it centers the body, agency, and self-awareness in an environment where people may often feel disconnected from all three. Practices like the Alexander Technique invite participants to notice habitual responses—physical, emotional, and mental—and to explore choice, presence, and ease within their own bodies. In a system built on restriction and routine, somatic work offers a rare opportunity to slow down, listen inwardly, and reclaim a sense of autonomy. It supports nervous system regulation, reduces stress and tension, and creates space for self-reflection and dignity which are foundational tools for creativity, communication, and human connection.

Thank you Julie!
